DriveThruRPG, the tabletop games industry’s largest online store of digital products, is turning 10 this week. They, and James Mathe’s RPGNow which began in 2001 and later merged with DriveThru, have changed the industry, and my life.
It’s hard to imagine what the tabletop games business would be like without the ability to reach so many customers directly, or without the ability of game designers operating small start-ups to forego the money pit of traditional offset print production and distribution to physical game stores. DriveThru has enabled a renaissance.
Personally speaking, My chance to work on staff at RPGNow until just after the merger allowed me to learn the ins and outs of the digital delivery business, and that knowledge, combined with the tools and continued support offered by DriveThruRPG, have allowed me to work full-time for the past decade, helping to support my family through game design. For that, I am forever thankful.
Happy, 10th Birthday, DriveThruRPG — may you have many more. Thank you for everything.
